Inside Tallahassee
Tallahassee neighborhoods
The same city can mean very different jobs: tight backyards under century-old oaks in the older core, big wooded lots on the northeast side, and younger trees in newer developments.
Midtown & Lafayette Park
Some of Tallahassee’s older neighborhoods, around Lake Ella, the Thomasville Road Historic District and Lafayette Park, which grew up in the 1920s and 30s among big oaks and tall pines. Expect mature trees close to older homes, narrow side yards and limited access for equipment, so many removals here come down in roped sections.
Betton Hills
North Tallahassee neighborhood of mid-century and ranch homes around Winthrop and McCord parks. Many lots have established canopy trees planted or kept when the homes were built decades ago, which puts some of them at the age where decay starts showing.
Killearn
Developed from 1964 on about 3,800 acres of former dairy land on the northeast side, with roughly 3,800 homes, mature trees, lakes and lots up to about three-quarters of an acre. Large trees set well back from the street mean longer carries for wood and brush, which affects pricing.
SouthWood
A planned community of about 8,700 acres on the southeast side, approved by the City in 1999. Trees here are generally younger than in the older neighborhoods, so trimming and clearance often matter as much as full removal, along with storm-damaged or poorly placed trees.
Unincorporated Leon County
Outside city limits
These areas follow Leon County’s rules rather than the City’s. See the permit guide for the difference.
Bradfordville
Unincorporated community about 8 miles north of downtown around US 319 and Bannerman Road, near Lake Iamonia. Larger lots and nearby canopy roads; check whether your tree sits in a canopy road protection zone before cutting.
Woodville
Unincorporated community just south of Tallahassee. The EF-1 tornado of May 10, 2024 tracked near Woodville, a reminder that storm cleanup isn’t limited to the city.
Nearby towns
Surrounding counties
Requests from these towns are welcome; availability depends on the local crew’s schedule and travel distance. Rules here are set by the town or county, not by Tallahassee or Leon County.
Crawfordville (Wakulla County)
The Wakulla County seat, about 18 miles south of Tallahassee’s airport and much lower-lying, at roughly 16 feet of elevation. Closer to the coast and its storm exposure.
Quincy & Havana (Gadsden County)
Quincy, the county seat, sits in rolling hills about 25 miles northwest; Havana is about 16 miles northwest on US 27. Both are former shade-tobacco towns with older homes and established trees.
Monticello (Jefferson County)
The Jefferson County seat, about 25 miles east via I-10, settled in 1827. Historic homes and mature trees in town, with rural property around it.
