What moves the price

Six things that change a tree removal quote

1. Height and trunk diameter

A 90-foot loblolly pine and a 25-foot crape myrtle are completely different jobs. Bigger trees mean more climbing or lift time, more cuts and much more wood to handle.

2. What’s underneath

A tree in an open backyard can often be felled in one piece. Over a roof, pool, fence or neighbor’s property, it has to come down in small, roped sections, which takes far longer.

3. Access for equipment

Gates too narrow for a chipper, steep backyards and soft ground mean more hand-carrying. Lots in established neighborhoods like Killearn and Betton Hills often have mature trees well back from the street.

4. Cranes and bucket trucks

Some removals need a crane to lift sections over a house. It adds cost, but it can be the safest and sometimes the fastest way to do the job.

5. Condition of the tree

Dead, rotten or storm-split trees can be unpredictable to climb and rig. Decayed laurel and water oaks are a common example in Tallahassee.

6. Power lines

Trees growing into or near service lines take extra planning and sometimes coordination with the utility, which raises the price.

Read the fine print

What a removal quote should spell out

  • Felling and cutting: the tree taken down to a stated stump height
  • Cleanup: limbs, brush and sawdust raked out of beds and lawn
  • Hauling: whether the logs and chips leave the property or stay
  • Stump grinding: included, optional, or not offered
  • Permits: who checks whether one is needed and who applies
  • Insurance: proof of liability and workers’ compensation coverage
  • Damage: what happens if a fence, sprinkler head or driveway is damaged

Why hauling matters

Don’t assume the City will take the wood

The City of Tallahassee’s curbside yard-waste service has limits: limbs no more than 6 feet long and 4 inches in diameter, in piles no higher than 4 feet. Leaves and pine straw go in bags or small boxes. Anything larger needs a special pickup request.

For a full tree removal, that usually means the crew hauls the wood away or you arrange a special pickup. A cheaper quote that leaves a pile of logs in the yard isn’t actually cheaper.

Permit costs. If your tree needs a City of Tallahassee tree permit, the application form listed a $273 fee when checked in October 2026, plus any replacement or fee-in-lieu for protected trees. See the permit guide.

Questions

Tree removal cost FAQ

Why did I get such different quotes for the same tree?
Usually because the quotes include different things. One may include hauling and stump grinding, another may leave the wood and the stump. Crews also price risk differently. Line the estimates up item by item before comparing totals.
Is it cheaper to remove several trees at once?
Often, yes. Much of the cost is getting the crew and equipment to your property, so a second or third tree on the same visit usually costs less than booking it separately. Ask for the price of each tree to be listed.
Does an emergency removal cost more?
Usually. A tree on a roof needs more rigging, more care and often a crane. See storm & emergency removal.
Can I lower the cost by keeping the wood?
Sometimes. Leaving the logs cut to length for firewood or for you to dispose of can reduce the price, but check the City’s yard waste limits first.
Is stump grinding included?
Not by default. Many removals leave a stump a few inches above ground. Stump grinding is often priced separately, by diameter. See stump grinding.
Do I pay a deposit?
Policies vary by company. For a normal removal, be cautious about paying a large amount upfront, and get the full scope and price in writing before work starts.
